What happened: Google DeepMind has officially released Gemma 2, the latest version of its open AI model family, available to researchers and developers globally.

Gemma 2 comes in 9 billion (9B) and 27 billion (27B) parameter sizes, offering improved performance, efficiency, and safety features compared to its predecessor.

Here’s the deets:

  • The 27B model competes with models twice its size, while the 9B model outperforms others in its class like Llama 3 8B.

  • It is designed to run on a single NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPU or TPU host, reducing deployment costs.

  • Optimized for fast inference across various hardware, from gaming laptops to cloud setups.

  • Available under a commercially-friendly license, compatible with major AI frameworks, and easily deployable on Google Cloud's Vertex AI.

  • It incorporates safety advancements like LLM Comparator for model evaluation and plans to open-source text watermarking technology.

FYI: Gemma 2 comes with a Gemma Cookbook for practical examples and recipes to guide developers in building applications and fine-tuning models.

What happened: Google Cloud is upgrading its Vertex AI platform with new capabilities aimed at improving the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated information for enterprise customers.

These enhancements include the integration of specialized third-party datasets and features that allow companies to ground AI responses in their own corporate data.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Customers will be able to use data from providers like Moody's, MSCI, Thomson Reuters, and ZoomInfo to improve AI results starting Q3 2024.

  • A high-fidelity mode that allows sourcing information from corporate datasets using a specialized Gemini 1.5 Flash version.

  • Expanded Vector Search now supports hybrid searches combining image and text-based queries.

  • Dynamic retrieval that automatically selects between Gemini datasets and Google Search for up-to-date information.

  • And an already available Grounding with Google Search feature that enables models to retrieve live information from the internet.

What happened: Anthropic has released Claude 3.5 Sonnet, its latest AI model that claims to match or outperform competitors like OpenAI's GPT-4o and Google's Gemini across various tasks. The model is now available to Claude users on web and iOS platforms, as well as to developers.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet introduces several advancements:

  • It operates twice as fast as Opus, with token pricing at only 20% of Anthropic's previous premium model.

  • In benchmarks testing reasoning, coding, mathematics, and knowledge capabilities, Claude 3.5 Sonnet surpasses both Opus and GPT-4.

  • It includes a new feature called 'Artifacts', that will allow users to interact with Claude through a real-time side panel for viewing, editing, and creating content.

  • Anthropic has also announced plans to release Claude 3.5 versions of Haiku and Opus later in the year, along with new features such as Memory.

💡Anthropic just launched a new Claude feature called ‘Projects’ that will allow users to collaborate, better organize files, chats, and information within a single location on the platform.
