Saying "Thank You" And "Please" To ChatGPT Is Wasting Millions — Sam Altman
But It Does Have A Positive Effect For The User
Hey there,
Have you ever caught yourself saying “Please“ or “Thank You“ to ChatGPT?
Well, apparently, it’s wasting millions of dollars of computing power according to OpenAI founder Sam Altman.

Altman explains that when you type extra words like "please" and "thank you" to ChatGPT, the AI has to use more power to process them. All this politeness is actually costing OpenAI tens of millions of dollars every year in extra electricity and computing costs.
The AI data centers already use about 2% of the world's electricity, so when millions of people add unnecessary words, it really adds up.
He calls being polite to AI chatbots "an expensive waste" because ChatGPT has no feelings and can't be offended. While Altman joked "You never know" about future AI consciousness, he made it clear that right now, there's simply no need to use polite language with AI.
But Being Polite With AI Still Has A Positive Effect For People Using It
For many, using polite words makes the chat feel calmer and more like talking to a real person. It helps people feel more comfortable, especially when they want help or a friendly answer.
Almost half of Americans think it’s the right thing to be polite to AI, and younger people are even more likely to use good manners with chatbots and virtual assistants.
People naturally treat things that talk back—like AI—as if they have feelings. This is called "anthropomorphism."
Even though AI doesn’t have feelings or care about manners, saying "please" and "thank you" can make us feel better and keep the conversation positive.
So saying please and thank you can be worth it if it makes you feel good.
